Shrek 1 Movie Review

The movie begins with Shrek reading a fairy tale book like a narrator, but he rips off one of the pages and uses it as toilet paper to wipe his ass. The 1st montage of this movie shows Shrek’s day to day activities to the song All Star by Smash Mouth. A group of peasants gather in front of his house so they’ll hunt him down since Shrek has a bounty on him. Shrek scares them away and notices a wanted poster the peasants dropped offering a reward for capturing fairy tale creatures. The next day, he goes out into the woods and meets Donkey, (voiced by Eddie Murphy) who was running away from some guards.

The guards see Shrek and immediately run away. Donkey decides to stick with Shrek, much to his surprise since he’s used to people running away from him. Later on in the night, Shrek’s swamp gets overrun by fairy tale creatures who’ve been kicked out of their homes by Lord Farquaad. Shrek decides to visit Farquaad’s palace to negotiate his privacy along with Donkey who knows the way to Duloc. The two of them reach Duloc and come across a knight tournament which aims to select a warrior to rescue Princess Fiona from a dark castle and protected by a fire breathing dragon.

Shrek and Donkey beat all the competitors, and Lord Farquaad agrees to grant Shrek his swamp back in he rescues Fiona.

After a traveling montage to the song “I’m On My Way”, Shrek and Donkey make it to the castle and split up to find Fiona. Donkey encounters the dragon and sweet talks the dragon when he finds out that it’s a girl. The dragon falls for him and takes Donkey to her chambers.

Meanwhile, Shrek disguises himself as a knight, and rescues Fiona from her tower, but she is annoyed by his lack of romanticism. Shrek also rescues Donkey from the dragon and traps the chains of the dragon so the 3 of them can escape out of the castle.

Fiona wants Shrek to take off his knight helmet so to properly thank him and when he does, she at first gets disgusted the fact that he’s an ogre, but then she starts finding out that Shrek and her have more in common and start falling for each other.

The next morning when the three of them wake up, Shrek and Donkey get ambushed by Robin Hood and his friends who think they’ve kidnapped Fiona.

Fiona kicks Robin Hood and his friends’s asses and Shrek along with Donkey get surprised by Fiona’s fighting ability. That night, Donkey checks up on Fiona after hearing a strange noise and finds Fiona has turned into a female ogre. She explains to him that she was cursed when she was younger and turns into an ogre every night.

That was the reason she was locked away in the castle and the only way to break the curse is from a kiss from her true love would turn her back into a human being. Shrek overhears the both of them after wanting to give Fiona a flower and thinks that they’re talking about him being ugly. He storms off heartbroken and in a fit of anger. The next morning, Shrek brings over Lord Farquaad to take and marry Fiona while he abandons Donkey.

When Shrek returns back to his swamp alone, he starts feeling miserable and starts missing Fiona.

Donkey returns to Shrek’s swamp and confronts him by saying when Fiona was talking about an “ugly beast” she was talking to him about was someone else. Shrek apologizes to him and Donkey accepts his apology, but urges him that he should confess his feelings to Fiona before Farquaad and her get married. The two fly over to the wedding chapel in Duloc thanks to the dragon that Donkey befriended.

Shrek confesses his feelings to Fiona and she reveals her true ogre form to him. Lord Farquaad gets disgusted by her appearance and sends his guards to execute Shrek and send Fiona back to the castle for the rest of her life, but thankfully Donkey breaks in along with the dragon, who eats Lord Farquaad.

Shrek and Fiona kiss which permanently makes her an ogre, but Shrek still considers her pretty. The movie ends with Shrek and Fiona in a fairy tale wedding carrier to the tune of I’m A Believer. Shrek 1 to me is still a pretty alright movie that holds up even after 22 years.
