The movie’s poster

The movie begins with Shrek and Fiona’s honeymoon after their marriage and has the song Accidentally in Love playing during the montage. After the montage, Shrek and Fiona are invited by Fiona’s parents (King Harold and Queen Lillian) to a royal ceremony at Far Far Away to celebrate their marriage. Shrek doesn’t want to go at first but Fiona convinces him that he shouldn’t worry. Both of them along with Donkey travel there and meet her parents who are shocked that she along with Shrek are ogres. During dinner, Shrek and King Harold get into a heated argument with each other and after the agreement, Fiona out of anger at the both of them locks herself in her room. Shrek worries that he’ll lose Fiona after reading her childhood diary about having a crush on Prince Charming.

Meanwhile, Harold is secretly talking to the Fairy Godmother who reprimands him since her son Prince Charming, was to marry Fiona instead of Shrek in exchange for Harold’s own happiness.

Harold decides to hire an assassinator to named Puss in Boots to kill Shrek but disguised as a hunting trip. The next day, Puss in Boots tries to murder Shrek but decides to be an ally to him along with Donkey. The three of them sneak into the fairy godmother’s factory and steal a potion named “Happily Ever After” so that Shrek could turn more handsome. Shrek and Donkey drink the potion but nothing happens until they along with Fiona suddenly fall asleep. The next day, Shrek along with Fiona turn into humans and Donkey turns into a white stallion. In order for Shrek and Fiona to permanently become humans, Shrek must kiss her by midnight. The fairy godmother finds out one of her potions has been stolen and has Prince Charming to pose as Shrek to trick Fiona.

Meanwhile, the fairy godmother tricks human Shrek to leave the castle after he sees human Fiona with Prince Charming and believes that letting her go. In reality, Fiona doesn’t have any feelings for Prince Charming and Fairy Godmother gives Harold a love potion to sneak into her tea. Shrek, Puss in Boots and Donkey overhear them and are arrested by the royal knights (in a parody of the show COPS) after Donkey exposes them by accident.

Bad boys, Bad boys, whatcha ya gonna do

The fairy tale characters that Shrek and Donkey met from the first movie, help them break out of jail and head off to the royal ball at the castle while riding on a gigantic gingerbread man and the song I need a hero sung by the Fairy Godmother plays during the scene. They finally reach the ballroom, but as it seems like it’s too late to stop Prince Charming from kissing Fiona, instead of falling in love, she headbutts him. Harold revealed that he swapped Fiona’s tea that had the love potion with his tea instead.

The Fairy Godmother tries to kill Shrek with her wand magic, but Harold takes the hit and turns back into a frog while the blast ricochets back to the Fairy Godmother and kills her. Harold apologizes to his wife along with Shrek and Fiona and approves their marriage. Before it becomes midnight, Shrek asks Fiona if she still wants to be human again, but she decides to be an ogre along with Shrek. They revert back into ogres while Donkey reverts from a white stallion into a regular donkey. The movie ends with a dance sequence with Donkey and Puss in Boots singing Viva la Vida.

To me, Shrek 2 still holds up as a pretty alright sequel even after almost 20 years after it released.
